Zendesk has announced a major simplification of its AI offering. Starting in late April, the distinction between "Essential" and "Advanced" AI agents is being removed. This means all customers on Suite and Support plans will gain access to Zendesk’s most powerful automation tools.
What is changing?
Previously, the most advanced AI features required a premium add-on. These powerful capabilities are now being included directly in your existing plan:
- Agentic Reasoning: The AI agent becomes significantly better at understanding complex context and solving multi-step tasks autonomously.
- External API Integrations: Connect your AI agent to external systems to perform actions like checking order status or updating customer data in real-time.
- Unified Management: Configuration is now consistent across all channels, including email, messaging, and voice (EAP).
- Streamlined Onboarding: A new guided setup flow makes it much faster to get your self-service solutions up and running.
A Note on Outcome-Based Pricing
While the access to these advanced features is now included in your plan, Zendesk is continuing its shift toward an outcome-based pricing model. This means you no longer pay a fixed monthly fee for the advanced AI module, but costs are instead tied to the number of successful resolutions the AI agent provides.
Legacy Bot Decommissioning Deadlines
As part of this modernization, older bot technologies are being retired. If you are currently using "Essential" AI agents or the classic "Bot Builder," please note the following dates:
- August 31, 2026: Zendesk will stop providing bug fixes and technical improvements for legacy bot functionality.
- December 2026: Legacy bot services will be fully decommissioned and taken out of service.
Our Recommendation
This update is a fantastic opportunity to upgrade your customer experience without increasing your fixed licensing overhead. However, as AI agents become more capable, they also become more complex. We recommend planning your migration from legacy bots to the new generation of AI agents well before the August deadline.
